ELECTRIC RIVER - Chris 'Sponge' Rogers
by Cristina Massei
As the Queen's Jubilee is about to hit London, there's an indeed more interesting Jubilee tour approaching the capital over the same weekend: Camden Barfly will be rocking to the sounds of The Vex, The Howling and Electric River. It will be the third of seven UK dates not to be missed, taking the acclaimed Friday night event also to Ashford, Manchester, Brighton, Bristol, Southampton and Nottingham. Because good things have to be shared!
We brought you The Vex on the most recent issue of our magazine (http://issuu.com/SonicShocks/docs/issue8/13), The Howling last week ( THE HOWLING Blacky) and here we go with Electric River to complete a pretty cool hat trick. Read on and get your tickets for the best Jubilee in town... You know it makes sense.
For all those who don’t know Electric River yet,
how would you describe your sound?
E.R is the result of youthful energy and a healthy list
of influences that culminate in all round catchy as hell numbers, fused with
heavy handed melodies and social commentary. Bags of passion and heaps of
power.
When and how did Electric River come together?
Nov
2004, 4 kids from London, Singapore, Kent & France with a passion for music
& good friendship... festering in a damp dirty old garage.
I hear Electric River is at its best on a stage;
what’s special about your live shows?
Energy
& something you can’t fake when you’ve been together this long &
through all the shit we’ve been through; on stage we are at home, it’s just
about the music & the audience, nothing else exists in that time.
You focus your work on the music rather than
production. In an era where music is mostly a fake over-polished lab creation,
which other bands you think are still getting their priorities right?
Gaslight
Anthem, Scoundrels
Lyrics are also very important to you, although
you claim not to be a political band.
Could you give us some examples of topics
you cover in your songs?
I
wouldn’t say we are a political band, we’re inspired by social observations, we
have our ears to the ground but we ain’t going to start preaching to people, we
sing about stuff that has influenced us, situations we have seen unfold or been
part of... struggle, hope, love, loss, pressure, work & sometimes Cleatus
& Carl sitting on a ranch.
The Jubilee tour is approaching fast… How did
you get involved?
The
queen sent her people down to a gig...bloody lovely chaps.
Are you looking forward to spend some time with
The Howling and The Vex around the UK?
Yeah
of course! Should be a great experience
Just to do some planning… What do you think is
going to be more fun: your Jubilee Tour or the Queen’s?
I
don’t know... I heard the Queen is secretly pretty mental, she might even turn
up to one of the shows... that would be pretty sick watching the queen throw
her horns up rocking the pogo!
Where should I go to check out some of your
music and where would you advise to start?
www.electricriver.co.uk is our hub, you’ll find all the links
there. ‘Radio No Go’ which was our first
studio album is a good starting point, there are various E.P’s we have recorded
since. You’ll hear how the band has developed & how our identity has formed
if you get your hands on all of em...
Aside from touring, what’s next on the Electric
River’s agenda?
We
have a couple of small festivals lined up over the summer, another E.P were
looking at releasing & touring, then it’s all about the new album, we have
a back log of songs we just need to sit down & start beating them up a
bit...
Although it doesn’t get as good as The Vex and
The Howling, what’s your dream act to support?
There
are so many & all the guys will have different opinions...we’re into a lot
of different types of music. For me it would probably be Gaslight Anthem or Frank
Turner but I could list hundreds.
Do you have a final message for those who are
about to see you for the first time at Jubilee, and one for those you already
conquered?
Mine’s
a Guiness & cheers!!!
